SMART RESILIENCY…IN BITE-SIZE CHUNKS

Resiliency, especially in business, is an interesting concept that’s often misunderstood. It’s not about blind, dogged, single-minded determination. Rather, smart resiliency is about knowing when to stop and regroup, reassess and, if needed, re-plan and change.

When something sounds impossible, a pragmatic perspective is important. The notion of running a hundred-mile race across the Lake District within the next 18 months may fill you with dread. But by breaking it down, analysing the components, and setting realistic milestones, a plan will emerge. What training regime is appropriate? How will you track fitness? Do you know all the routes and options? What support is needed on different sections? Is there a good safety plan in place?

Personally, each year I actively make a point of trying something new. Last year it was the Lakeland 100 plus mastering off-road motorcycling. Another year I learnt to skydive. And another saw me embark on a 2-year MBA. So why does it matter? Because life is not a trial run.

In business, when a leader creates and shares a strategic vision for the organisation, even the brilliant can also seem impossible. But the approach to deliver is the same. Big projects that might take two or three years to come to fruition can still be broken down into milestones. Work can be planned and delivered collaboratively in stages by engaging and supporting cross-functional teams.
